A transgender teenager has claimed their local barbershop refused to serve them because it 'only serves boys' - leaving their family 'disgusted and angry'.

The 15-year-old, who was born female but is transitioning to male, visited the shop in Murraylands, in regional South Australia, last month and asked for a 'male-style' trim.

However, they claim they were told by the stylist that the business only served boys and men - leaving them feeling 'alienated' and on the verge of tears.

The teen's furious family, who did not want to be identified, have slammed the barbershop and are now demanding an apology.

The teen has visited the barbershop for three years without issue, but said it had recently changed owners and their usual barber wasn't present at the time of the altercation.

'I felt quite alienated,' the teenager told the Advertiser.

'It was definite discrimination. She refused to serve me because of what I looked like and the fact that I wasn't a guy.

'Once I told her the haircut was for me she told me that she wouldn't do that. After she said that I had to hold back tears. She told me her boss had said she wasn't allowed to cut girls' hair – the shop only serves boys.'

The 15-year-old said they were shocked to hear discrimination still occurred in this day and age, and said hairdressers should be available to people of all genders.

The teen's mother said the incident was 'absolutely disgusting'.

She revealed they had to instead travel to another town to get her child a haircut, saying she felt like they were living in the 'dark ages'.
